Dear Parents, Guardians and Caregivers
I hope you all enjoyed some of the benefits of spending more time with your children last week. We are very happy and feel fortunate to be back at school!
The school captains introduced a new whole school Learning Intention, at our assembly yesterday, for the coming weeks. In line with our school expectation of “Be Respectful” we are going to focus on using formal language, when appropriate, at school. By this we mean teachers and students greeting each other by name and using our manners at all times. We will be talking about when informal language is appropriate and when it is not. We will explore how using a pleasant and polite tone of voice also contributes to formal exchanges.
This week our Term 2 parent teacher Interviews will be held, by telephone, on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. I encourage you to take the opportunity to discuss your child/ren’s progress with their teacher/s. Strong parent-teacher relationships are instrumental to children’s learning and development. In these challenging times it is especially important to maintain communication.
This Friday the staff will be participating in a professional development day with Dom Ryan, who is the manager of Catholic Identity and Religious Education, DOSCEL. He will be informing staff about the Sexuality Education in Catholic Schools resource, which accompanies the Religious education curriculum.
Staff news
It is with regret that I inform you that Ms Loreena Keane will be leaving our school and community at the end of this, second, term. Loreena and her family are making a move to be closer to family. While we support and understand this decision, Loreena and her children will be greatly missed! We are very thankful to Loreena for her contribution to our school, she has been a wonderfully caring, professional, hardworking member of staff who brings a terrific sense of calm and common sense that is most appreciated.
Grade 3/4T will be taught by Ms Julia Foster for the remainder of 2021. Julia has been working, mostly in the Grade 3 / 4 area, in a supporting role. She knows the students well and is very familiar with the class routines and curriculum therefore we anticipate that it will be a smooth transition for the students.
Joanne Coldebella
Acting Principal
Grade 1/2 students have been learning about the Sacraments. We learned that Baptism is the first sacrament of initiation. After reading about Jesus' Baptism, each student made a dove to represent the Holy Spirit descending upon Jesus.
In maths we are learning about 2D shapes. We made different quadrilaterals and triangles on our geoboards. It was lots of fun!
1/2 Team
In religion this term the grade 5/6 students have been learning about events that occur after Easter including the road to Emmaus, Jesus appearing to the disciples, the Ascension and Pentecost. Students have worked in groups to read and unpack a reading from the Bible, create a poster and share their learning with the rest of the class. We are going to use our posters to create a timeline of events from Easter Sunday through to Pentecost.
Parent Teacher Interviews - Term 2
Term 2 Parent Teacher Interviews will be held on Tuesday June 15 and Thursday June 17 between 3:40pm and 5:50 pm.
In line with the current restrictions they will be held via a telephone call.
Bookings for Parent Teacher Interviews are to be made though PAM if you have not setup your account please do so via the email invite previously provided or email the office via info@stjwonthaggi.catholic.edu.au and we will help you get setup.
It is very important for parents and teachers to be working in partnership for the benefit of the students' learning. PT interviews are a great opportunity to discuss your child's progress.
If you have been involved in PSG meetings, please do not arrange an appointment. These interviews are expected to be of 10 minutes duration.
If you have any queries regarding booking an appointment please contact the office.
As you would have read in correspondence over this past year we have, as directed by DOSCEL Secretariat been making the transition over to SIMON.
All families should have received an email welcoming you to St Joseph's Wonthaggi School's Parent Access Module or PAM and asking you to follow the prompts to setup your account.
If you have not received an email please check your spam / junk folder or contact the office.
It is important that these accounts be established as Parent Teacher Interview bookings and Semester 1 reports will be available for parents to access on PAM.
You will find attached a basic user guide to add your child/rens medical profile and attendance onto your PAM account once you are setup.
If you have any problems please call or email the office at info@stjwonthaggi.catholic.edu.au
On Thursday 27 of May, 27 St Joseph’s students headed down to Stony Creek race track to compete at the Division Cross Country Championships. We lucked out and were able to complete the races before we went back into lockdown the next day. Through rain, cold and icy wind the students raced around the 2km or 3km courses and tried their hardest and produced some great results.
Congratulations to everyone who competed and all who cheered on their school mates in their races, it was wonderful to see how excited everyone was for other people’s successes.
Regional Cross Country at this stage is postponed but hopefully will run at some stage this term.
Congratulations to these students who will move on

Physical Education and Sports Coordinator
St Joseph’s had a visit from Life Education, these sessions educated students on a wide range of health topics including how the human body works, healthy eating and nutrition, bullying, resilience and social skills. The Life Education sessions are always fun and the students thoroughly enjoyed their interactive lessons, complete with a special appearance by the much loved giraffe, Harold. Life Education will be back later in the year as they didnt get a chance to visit all classes prior to lock down.
We thank Australian Dental Health Victoria for their Dental Van visit. Unfortunately due to the lock down we experienced they were unable to finish all of their examinations, once restrictions change they will make a time to come back and see the students they missed previously.
St Vincent de Paul - Winter Appeal
Each year in the lead up to winter, we assist the St Vincent de Paul society to fundraise for those in need. This year, each level will be asked to donate within a particular category. The Prep-2's are asked to donate non-perishable breakfast goods. Grade 3/4's are asked to donate non-perishable pantry items. Grade 5/6's are asked to donate toiletry items. We will be taking donations in your child's classroom for the remainder of the term. See the images below for donation ideas. We thank you for your generosity and support in this worthwhile cause.
