Every Child, Every Day, Learning and Achieving in a Faith - Filled Environment
Dear Parents, Students, Staff and all associated with St Joseph’s Community
It was only the other day a parent mentioned to me how impressed they had been with their children in the way they had settled into school this year. As we enter the midway point of the term, the freshness and excitement of ‘day one’ has begun to wear off and students are becoming familiar with the school routines – including waking up early! For parents, the daily routine of getting your children out of bed, dressed, fed and ready for school, lunches organised, notifications checked and bags packed, makes for a very hectic schedule!
Preparation, punctuality and organisation are behaviours that all students should practise. As parents, we need to teach these skills to our children as they enable them to begin the day without anxiety. Students need assistance with this formation and this is where parents can be of tremendous influence. Simply having your child at school on time and ready for the day ensures they have the best chance of succeeding with their learning tasks for that day.
Children have a responsibility in this regard as well. As teachers are required to be well prepared for their lessons each day, so too, are the children. At St Joseph’s School we are trying to teach the children independence. This means, that as parents, we need to step back occasionally and let our children ‘stand on their own two feet’. Children will be as capable as we let them! If we are always running to their aid, so to speak, they will never learn to be responsible.
Of course, we need to be mindful of their age as the responsibility and independence levels vary. However, children enjoy the challenge and meeting the expectations set by mum and dad as well as their class teacher. By implementing some of these practices from early on, it will go a long way to ensure that our children are given every possible opportunity to achieve as well as enjoy their day at school.
2022 School Review
This year St Joseph’s will undertake its cyclical school review. This will provide an opportunity for reflection as we identify strengths and areas for improvement under the main dimensions of Catholic Identity and Religious Education, Learning and Teaching, and Leadership, and make recommendations for the future. The process will enable identification of high leverage priorities for the school’s ongoing school improvement in line with the Diocesan Strategic Plan and will see the establishment of a new 4-year Strategic Improvement Plan.
Parent Communication
Though our Term 1 parent teacher interviews and PSG meetings are presently being held this week, if parents have any matters about their child’s welfare or progress at any time, their first point of contact should be their child’s teacher. Parents are very welcome to telephone, send an email or Seesaw message/note to the teacher to arrange a mutually convenient time to connect. Teachers will then get in contact at their earliest convenience, generally within 24-48 hours. Please note that messages sent on weekends or after hours will be addressed by staff on the next school day or the relevant staff members working day.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us as we are always here to help and that no question or concern is too small or unimportant. We always find that the sooner we ask for assistance or clarification, the sooner we can work together to resolve any situation that may arise.
Yours in Catholic Education

O, Lord Jesus.
We pray for a heart that loves you.
Give us the strength to love others more than we love ourselves.
We thank you for this day.
We thank you for another opportunity.
Amen.
The Grade 1/2 students have been learning about how we can have a healthy mind, healthy body and healthy classroom. We have been learning how to fill each other’s ‘buckets’ by being kind and giving each other compliments.
In maths we have been practising skip counting by twos, fives and tens. We have also been learning about the seasons and our calendar. We made trees that show each of the seasons.
We loved participating in the beginning of the year liturgy and meeting Father Darren’s family (his cats Lucy and Gus).
1/2 Team
It has been a busy few weeks in the 5/6 neighbourhood. We have been exploring different approaches to writing narratives by looking at sizzling starts and adverbial phrases. We are working to integrate these features into our writing to make our stories more interesting.
It has been fantastic to see all of the 5/6 students filling in their reading diaries every day, we have had a different focus for our diaries each week. This week we are looking at visualising, painting pictures in our minds of what we have been reading.

Last Friday the whole school celebrated a "Welcome Liturgy" at school. While we are still feeling the effects of Covid and with restrictions in place around gathering, we found a creative way around it. Father Darren pre-recorded his homily and a video introducing himself to the school community. Feel free to watch Father Darren's address to the school. We feel blessed to have a Parish Priest who loves to be involved in all aspects of our church and school life.

Last week a group of students represented St Joseph's at the District Swimming Carnival held at Cowes Primary School. The students did a great job and a number of students will go on to represent the school at the Division Swimming event to be held this Friday. A fantastic effort by all and good luck to those moving onto the next round.
