Inquiry teaching
Last week the staff participated in professional learning around inquiry teaching or an inquiry approach to learning. We have been developing this approach across the school over the last eighteen months, with a particular focus on the Integrated Students area of the curriculum. The what of our teaching, the content, is dictated primarily by the Victorian Curriculum while current research and evidence based practice influences how we teach. We have had a focus on involving the students in their learning, encouraging active learning as opposed to passive learning. We have consciously been giving students many opportunities to dialogue about their learning, work in groups, ask questions and make suggestions so they have more agency and ownership of their progress and achievements.
Shaz Bailey, who is an expert in the inquiry teaching field, presented and worked with staff last Friday. Shaz challenged the staff in their thinking and suggested ways to engage the students even further through inquiry. We look forward to implementing new ideas and learning from Shaz’s inspirational work.
Work Experience
Next week we welcome several students from Mary MacKillop Catholic Regional College and Bass Coast College for work experience. It looks to be a reunion of sorts as many are former students. It is a privilege to have so many students want to spend this time with us. We hope all the students acquire some understanding about the work of our staff here and enjoy working with the students.
Open afternoon
Next Monday, June 19 is our Open Afternoon, commencing at 2.30pm and concluding at 3.15pm. The afternoon is an opportunity for students to share their learning for the term with parents, relatives or friends. The students have been working very hard and are excited to present their achievements to an authentic audience. All are welcome- we look forward to seeing you!
As this is the last newsletter before the holiday break I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday. I hope the weather is kind and the students have a well earned break from school. Term 3 commences on Monday July 10, along with the first Footsteps Dance class for the term!

As part of our Light and Sound unit, 1/2 students have been creating their own shadow puppet plays. They have been busy writing their own version of a fairytale. Students have designed silhouettes of their characters and scenery. They considered how including moving parts and holes in their puppets can enhance the shadows. We can't wait to share our finished plays with you at our upcoming open afternoon!
1/2 Team
This term the 5/6's have been learning about graphs in Maths and everyone has made extraordinary graphs based on our school’s canteen sales. For example, some of our students did it based on the profit the canteen made over six weeks and turned it into a graph.
In Integrated studies we have been doing a lot of Science experiments based on biology. We have been growing duckweed in different environments like salt water, sun, and darkness. Some have grown very well and others have not. We have also been growing mould by taking samples of random things all around the classroom like a windowsill or a drink bottle. It has been surprising as the air purifier has got a lot of mould in just 2 days. Students have recently started another experiment where we have chosen our topic to do, like growing beans in a cup, and seeing how flowers change colour in different water environments.
In Music we have been working on using different instruments and working together in a band, we will be focusing on the ukulele next term.
In STEAM, we are learning about planets and the solar system. We have learned that there are 2 different types of planets: Jovian planets and Terrestrial planets.
In English, we are focusing on writing narratives and have been doing a lot of cold writing during the past few weeks.
Recently some of the Grade 6 Students celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation. It was a beautiful Mass thank you to Father Darren, Ms. Buccilli, and all involved in making this special occasion happen.

On Friday, June 2, almost all the girls in Grade 5/6 went to participate in District Netball. We were all over the moon with excitement. On the day all the girls got ready at 9.15 am and then went off to Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve to play Newhaven Primary, Cowes Primary, Newhaven College, San Remo Primary, and Bass Valley Primary. We had three teams in all and we all tried our best and supported our teammates. We won some games and lost some games, but apart from that we all had so much fun and are just happy we got to do it.

On Friday the 2nd of June the boys that made the footy team went to the Wonthaggi Power oval to play 4 games of Football. Our boys’ team won against San Remo Primary, Wonthaggi North, and Cowes Primary School but just lost to Newhaven College by a goal and a couple of points. The team put up such a good fight great job to everyone who played.

Semester 1 Reports and Parent-Teacher Interviews
We have been reviewing our report statements to ensure they accurately reflect the Victorian Curriculum and succinctly describe what has been taught and assessed this semester.
Our reports provide parents with an evidence based description of their child’s achievements. The reports are the result of a great amount of planning, teaching to target student needs, and assessment. Our focus is on progress for every child. As each child is on their own learning journey, progress is particularly individual.
Teachers strive to maintain clear communication with parents regarding their child’s learning progress. Seesaw, phone calls, emails, messages, and Open Afternoons all provide avenues for this communication to occur in addition to the formal reporting process.
This year the school will not be organising formal Parent-Teacher Interviews at the end of Term 2. Parents are most welcome to contact their child’s teacher to arrange to speak to him/her about their child’s progress at a time that suits both parties if desired. Formal Parent-Teacher Interviews will, as usual, be held at the end of Term 3.
Semester 2 Reports will be available via your child's PAM accounts on Friday June 16. If you need assistance with logging into your account please contact the office or email info@stjwonthaggi.catholic.edu.au
Statements for Term 2 have been emailed to families. If you have not received your statement or have any queries please contact the office or email kcarew@stjwonthaggi.catholic.edu.au

COMMUNION ON THE TONGUE: People who prefer to receive communion on the tongue, would you please come last for communion, as there is still widespread fear of COVID.
PLEASE PRAY: For those who continue to be affected by the Wars in Ukraine and Sudan. For all who are sick, lonely and suffering from illness and pain. For the anniversary of Mgr. Stan Crowe, Fr. William McLoughlin, Bishop Richard Ryan CM, Fr. Michael Clarke OMI and our loved ones. May God’s merciful love shine on them and on the loved ones left behind.
Please pray for those who continue to be affected by the Ukrainian War, and those natural disasters. Prayer for Peace and Justice in Ukraine.
Prayer for Peace and Justice in Ukraine.
God of peace and justice,
Who change the hardened heart and break the power of
violence, we entrust the people of Ukraine to you.
Protect them in this time of peril;
let them know not death but life, not slavery but freedom,
You are Father of all;
we are brothers and sisters.
Give us the strength to live that truth in love,
choosing peace not war.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
